Success: UBCD4Win 3.5 on UDA 2.0 beta 14

Postby apex » Sat Feb 20, 2010 2:22 am

I have a working UBCD4Win (3.5) installed and booting from UDA 2.0 beta 14 (PXE).

The only thing you need is a Windows 2003 SP2 iso. Yes, it must be SP2.

  • Create a UBCD4Win iso file (Once started, it takes a few hours on my 2.33Ghz core 2 quad). The directions are here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm. You MUST create it from the same Windows 2003 SP2 .iso (or CD) that you will be using in UDA.
  • Move/Upload the UBCD4Win .iso and your Windows 2003 SP2 .iso to your UDA storage medium.
  • Create a new OS in UDA. Select BartPE as the Operating System.
  • UDA will ask for a 'BartPE ISO'. Select the .iso that you created with UBCD4Win.
  • UDA will ask for a 'Windows 2003 SP2 iso'. Select your Windows 2003 SP2 .iso.
  • Click 'Finish'. Now create a new template selecting "BartPE" as the OS and your newly creates OS as the flavor. Click 'Finish'.
  • Boot your PXE client and select your new flavor. Hopefully it works for you as well as it works for me.

In my experience, if you get a BSOD, it's because the *pe iso wasn't created from the same Windows 2003 iso file that you have in UDA.
If you get an error saying UDA can't load the ramdisk, check UDA's tftp log. You may need to login via ssh to do this. Here's an easy command to use: tail -f /var/log/*

Good luck!

The .iso filename must also be less than (around 10) characters in length.

Deploy Windows XP HowTo

Postby Ednil » Tue Jul 12, 2011 2:01 pm

Hi there,

I hijacked this post, as we are not allowed to create new ones (or I may have missed the button).

I’m new to UDA and just got 2.0 build 17 running on my ESXi 3.5.
With help of this forum I got a SMB share running as storage and an ISO integrated as OS. It’s an WinXP install CD enhanced by nLite with SP3 and some drivers.
I also tried to setup a template, but here it ends

I choose XP of course, but do I need Subtemplates? And the Advanced part seems to be to advanced for me

Unfortunately I can’t find a step-by-step HowTo anywhere. If there is one, please point me to it. If not, maybe one of you who can do it, please take the time and write one down.

I’m sure I’m not the only one having difficulties setting up UDA for WinXP deployment. Not all of us need hundreds of ESX servers

Thanks a lot!
